Subsequently consulting with friends and eliminating ones we didn't beloved, we narrowed it down to v or 6 finalists, and somewhen settled on Quora."[ix] Cheever went on to land, "The closest contest that [the name] Quora had was Quiver."[9]
2010–2013: Early on growth [edit]

Nobody likes banner ads, ads from shady companies, or ads that are irrelevant to their needs."[3]
In June 2011, Quora redesigned the navigation and usability of its website.[xi] Co-founder Adam D'Angelo compared the redesigned Quora to Wikipedia, and stated that the changes to the website were made on the basis of what had worked and what had not when the website had experienced unprecedented growth six months earlier.[11] In September 2012, co-founder Charlie Cheever stepped down every bit co-operator of the visitor, taking an advisory office.[12] The other co-founder, Adam D'Angelo, continued to maintain a high degree of control over the company.[3]
In January 2013, Quora launched a blogging platform assuasive users to post not-reply content.[13] Quora launched a full-text search of questions and answers on its website on March 20, 2013,[14] and extended the feature to mobile devices in late May 2013.[fifteen] It also appear in May 2013 that usage metrics had tripled relative to the same fourth dimension in the prior yr.[16] In November 2013, Quora introduced a characteristic called Stats to let all Quora users to see summary and detailed statistics of how many people had viewed, upvoted, and shared their questions and answers.[17] [18] TechCrunch reported that, although Quora had no firsthand plans for monetization, they believed that search ads would probable be their eventual source of acquirement.[19]
2014–2017: Continued growth and new features [edit]
Google Search popularity for Quora, 2012–2017
2014 organization [edit]
Quora was evolving into "a more organized Yahoo Answers, a classier Reddit, an opinionated Wikipedia", and became pop in tech circles.[3] In April 2014, Quora raised $80 meg from Tiger Global at a reported $900 million valuation.[20] [21] Quora was i of the Summer 2014 Y Combinator companies,[22] although information technology was described as "the oldest Y-Combinator always".[23]
Parlio conquering [edit]
In March 2016, Quora acquired the online customs website Parlio.[24]
Question details [edit]
Users were able to add together descriptions to questions. On Dec eighth, 2015, these were limited to 300 characters, and questions themselves to 150, not affecting existing questions.[25] On August tertiary, 2017, question details were discontinued entirely and replaced with an optional source URL input field to provide context, reportedly to encourage users to phrase questions more descriptively. Existing question details were stored in comments under corresponding questions.[26]

In April 2017, Quora claimed to have 190 million monthly unique visitors, up from 100 million a year before. That same month, Quora was reported to take received Series D funding with a valuation of $1.8 billion.[36]
2018–2019: Further growth and data alienation [edit]
In September 2018, Quora reported that information technology was receiving 300 meg unique visitors every month.[3] [36] Despite its big number of registered users, Quora did not possess the same level of mainstream cultural authority as sites like Twitter, which, at the fourth dimension, had roughly 326 million registered users.[3] [37] This may take been because a large number of registered users on the site did not use it regularly and many did not even know they had accounts since they had either created them unknowingly through other social media sites linked to Quora or created them years previously and forgotten nigh them.[37] [38] Quora uses popups and interstitials to forcefulness users to login or annals before they can see more of the content, similar to a metered paywall.[39]
In December 2018, Quora announced that approximately 100 million user accounts were affected by a data alienation.[37] [forty] The hacked information included users' names, email addresses, encrypted passwords, data from social networks like Facebook and Twitter if people had chosen to link them to their Quora accounts, questions they had asked, and answers they had written.[40] Adam D'Angelo stated, "The overwhelming majority of the content accessed was already public on Quora, but the compromise of business relationship and other private information is serious."[40]Compromised information could also allow hackers to log into a Quora user's connected social media accounts, via access tokens. A class activity lawsuit, case number 5:18-cv-07597-BLF, was filed in the Northern District of California, on behalf of named plaintiffs in New Jersey and Colorado by Capstone Law and Franklin D. Azar & Associates, P.C.[41] [42]
By May 2019, Quora was valued at $2 billion equally a company and it was finalizing a $60 million investment circular, which was led by Valor Equity Partners, a individual equity firm with ties to Tesla, Inc. and SpaceX.[3] In spite of this, the site all the same showed very few ads compared to other sites of its kind and the company was still struggling to profit, having made simply $twenty million in revenue in 2018.[3] Several investors passed on the opportunity to invest in Quora, citing the company's "poor track record of really making money."[3] Schleifer characterized the disparity between Quora's valuation as a company and its actual profits as a effect of "the loftier valuation for virtually everything these days in the tech sector."[3]
In Dec 2019, Quora announced that it would open its first international engineering office in Vancouver, which would bargain with automobile learning and other engineering functions.[43] That same month, Quora launched its Arabic, Gujarati, Hebrew, Kannada, Malayalam, and Telugu versions.[44]
2020 [edit]
In June 2020, during to COVID-19 pandemic, Adam D'Angelo announced that Quora would permanently allow for remote work.[45]
2021 [edit]
On 19 April, Quora eliminated the requirement that users apply their real names and immune users to employ pseudonyms.[46]
On 5 August, Quora began assuasive contributors to monetize their content. In addition, the platform launched a subscription service chosen Quora+ which allows subscribers to pay a $v monthly fee or a $fifty annual subscription to admission content that any creator chooses to put behind a paywall.[47] [48]
Operation [edit]
Website [edit]
- URL format
URLs of questions comprise simply the question title without a numeric identifier as used on Stack Exchange sites (in improver to a URL slug), and /unanswered/ before the championship, if the question is unanswered.
- User interface
With the help of asynchronous JavaScript and XML, some site functionality resembles instant messaging, such as updating follow counts and an indicator showing that a user is typing an reply.[49]
Real Name Policy [edit]
Prior to April nineteen, 2021, Quora required users to annals with the complete form of their existent names rather than an Internet pseudonym or other screen name;[50] although verification of names was non required, false names could exist reported by the community. This was done with the ostensible intent of adding credibility to answers. Users with a certain amount of activity on the website accept the pick to write their answers anonymously but not by default.[ citation needed ] Visitors unwilling to log in or utilize cookies accept had to resort to workarounds to use the site.[51] Users may also log in with their Google or Facebook accounts past using the OpenID protocol. The Existent Name Policy was rescinded on Apr nineteen, 2021.[46]
As of 2011, the Quora community included answers by some well-known people such as Jimmy Wales, Richard A. Muller, Clayton C. Anderson, Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and Adrián Lamo,[52] [53] too every bit some current and quondam professional able-bodied personalities, scientists, and other experts in their fields.
Quora allows users to create user profiles with a proper name and photo, and admission to edit count and other site use statistics. In August 2012, blogger Ivan Kirigin pointed out that acquaintances and followers could see his activity, including which questions he had looked at.[54] In response, Quora stopped showing question views in feeds later that calendar month.[55] By default, Quora exposes its users' profiles to search engines. Users can disable this characteristic.[56]
Respond recommendations [edit]
Quora has developed its ain proprietary algorithm to rank answers, which works similarly to Google'south PageRank.[57] Quora uses Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud technology to host the servers that run its website.[58] [59]
Currently, Quora has various ways of recommending questions to users:[60]
- Home feed question recommendations
- In this method, users have a timeline that is personalized to their preferences. Quora too provides "interesting" questions that are relevant to those preferences.
- Daily digest
- In this method, Quora sends a daily email containing a set of questions with one answer that is accounted the best answer, given sure ranking criteria.
- Related questions
- In this method, a set of questions that relates to the current question is displayed on the side. This display is not tailored to the specific user.
- Requested answers
- This feature lets a user direct a question to other users whom they consider better suited to answer it.
Content moderation [edit]
Quora supports various features to moderate content posted by users, though mainly relies on user reporting and human moderators.
Top Writers Programme [edit]
In Nov 2012, Quora introduced the Peak Writers Program as a manner to recognize individuals who had made especially valuable content contributions to the site and encourage them to proceed. Nigh 150 writers were chosen each year. Top writers were invited to occasional exclusive events and received gifts such as branded clothing items and books. The company believed that by cultivating a group of core users who were particularly invested in the site, a positive feedback loop of user date would be created.[61]
After not selecting any 2019 or 2020 English-language Top Writers, the programme was officially retired in Apr 2021 just will continue in other languages.[62]
Reception [edit]
Reviews [edit]
Quora was reviewed extensively by the media in 2010.[63] [64] [65] Quora was hacked in 2018, leading to loss of information of users to hackers.[66] According to Robert Scoble, Quora succeeded in combining attributes of Twitter and Facebook.[67] Afterwards, in 2011, Scoble criticized Quora for being a "horrid service for blogging" and, although a decent question and answer website, not substantially improve than alternatives.[68]
Quora was highly criticized for removing question details in August 2017. According to some users, the removal of question details express the ability to submit personal questions and questions requiring code excerpts, multimedia, or complexity of any sort that could not fit into the length limit for a URL.[69] [seventy] According to an official product update annunciation, the removal of question details was made to emphasize approved questions.[71]
The moderation system of Quora has been a often criticized topic. Criticisms by and large hinge around the website's ineffective, inconsistent, and opaque approach to moderation from the perspective of its users: apparent non-violations are automatically flagged past the website'south algorithm (such as pasting a web URL to cite a source)[72] while posts that are either counter-factual with no bankroll sources, or answers and comments that are highly inflammatory, adversarial, or harassing appear to stay despite reporting.[73] The website's responses to moderation appeals are seen by the userbase as impersonal and automatic, leaving many to wonder how much of the website's moderation is performed past human staff and how much is automated.[72] [74] [75] [76]
The inconsistency of Quora moderation has been blamed for the proliferation of harmful prejudices on the website. In 2014, in improver to being privately harassed, female users noted a ubiquity of pointed, sexist questions about women with more than conspicuously sexist question details whereas the aforementioned kinds of questions rephrased to be near men were chop-chop taken downward. Ane user was subject of a sexually defamatory mail containing a photo of her that was taken down by moderation merely later on the incident was publicized online.[77] Racism and farthermost far right viewpoints have been noted to exist ubiquitous on Quora despite its policies. [78] [79] Some Quora users feel there has been an increase of anti-Semitism on the website, pointing to a community for Holocaust denial.[fourscore] Others point to moderation decisions that seem biased against Palestinian posters, including the banning of Rima Najjar, likewise as banning the Palestinian culture, history and politics space "Palestine Today" iii times from 2017 to February 2020. [81]
Use in influence operations [edit]
In 2018, the People'south Daily, the official paper of the Cardinal Committee of the Chinese Communist Political party, reported on successful results from coordinated use of Quora in strange propaganda campaigns.[82]
Lawsuit [edit]
On January 1, 2020, a retired Palestinian American professor, Rima Najjar Merriman, filed a lawsuit against Quora at the United States District Courtroom for the Northern Commune of California. Her lawsuit alleged that she had been wrongfully banned from Quora for posting hate voice communication for calling some other posters "Zionists" and for "calling out" other writers.[83] [84] On March 23, 2020, Merriman filed for a voluntary dismissal of her lawsuit.[85]
